What Are Challenges?
This topic explains what Challenges are and where to find the feature. Additionally, this topic explains what leaderboards and prizes are, other features that keep you motivated.
Challenges Explained
Challenges are a fun way to motivate yourself to commit to and accomplish a specific goal. They also allow you to compete with other Strava athletes towards the goal. There are different types of challenges that differ in mileage and duration.
These are the common types:
- Virtual Races – Race events with a required distance and time window to complete, but at a location of your choosing.
- Segment Challenges – Challenges where athletes are required to complete a specific Segment.
- Rotating Monthly Challenges – Challenges that appear at the start of each month and require athletes to complete a specific goal for that month (e.g. run a total of 50 km in the month of September.)
- Streak Challenges – Challenges that ask athletes to complete a specific number of activities for a consecutive number of weeks.

Leaderboards are postings that rank Strava athletes who are participating in challenges. Some challenges, such as Virtual Races and Segment Challenges, have leaderboards while others like Streak Challenges do not.
Ensure your activity privacy controls are set to Everyone in order to be included in leaderboards.

Some challenges are sponsored by other brands and award prizes for ranking or participating in challenges. Examples of prizes are gift cards and running apparel. Read the challenge page for details on prizes as there may be restrictions in some countries on prize redemption.
To redeem prizes, complete the following:
- Ensure a valid email is under Settings.
- Turn on the push notification "Challenge Rewards".
